Aluminum Industry Launches Green Building Initiative
SHANGHAI, China & ARLINGTON, Virginia, June 29, 2009
(News Release) — The aluminum industry announces the
launch of a new green building initiative. IAI Chairman Artem
Volynets, Director for Corporate Strategy, UC Rusal officially announced
the initiative today—a new content-rich Green Architecture
Website, http://greenbuilding.world-aluminium.org,
which highlights the advantages of using aluminum in architectural
design.
“Through the IAI, the aluminum industry aims to promote a wider
understanding of its products and manufacturing processes and to affect
positively the sustainability of the industry, the communities in which
it operates, and the global communities that every day rely on its
products,” said Volynets.
The Aluminum Association’s Chairman Kevin Anton, President,
Alcoa Materials Management announced the establishment of a Building
& Construction (B&C) Committee earlier this year. The
B&C Committee will aid sustainability messaging through the research
of end-of-life recycling rates and use-phase environmental benefits of
aluminum, along with other marketing efforts. Anton says the Committee
was proud to partner with global aluminum associations to develop the
new green building website, and future sustainability initiatives.
“We congratulate IAI on developing a unique and highly useful
tool for those who design the next generation of attractive, energy
efficient and environmentally friendly buildings,” said
Anton. “Through the Aluminum Association’s Building
& Construction Committee, we look forward to partnering with IAI to
reach out to specifiers and customers to tell our story of added value
and sustainability.”
The new site features some of the world’s leading architects
and their groundbreaking designs for green buildings—which utilize
aluminum applications in innovative ways. It also provides
credible and accurate life cycle data. In addition, the site
provides detailed cases to illustrate aluminum’s superior
performance in six key areas, including: durable, flexible, recyclable,
strong, global improvement and cradle to cradle life cycle.
The Aluminum Association’s Building and Construction Committee
was created to support the Association’s Sustainability Working
Group, which wants to see public policy, product promotion, and
recycling come together to help conserve for the future. Chaired
by Alcoa Kawneer’s Eddie Bugg, membership of the Aluminum
Association B&C Committee also includes representatives of Hydro
Aluminum North America, Jupiter Aluminum Corporation, Novelis Inc.,
Nichols Aluminum and Rio Tinto Alcan.
