'Cans for Causes' Helps Fight Cancer Through Relay for LifeThe Aluminum Association’s Cans for Causes Program is assisting the Calling for a Cure relay team, located in Bladen County, N.C., with its recycling efforts. “As part of our fundraising efforts, we have team members who purchase and donate can drinks and we sell them at work,” said Becky White, team member. “All proceeds go to Relay for Life. Cans for Causes is a great organization because it not only provides an efficient and effective way to recycle and keep the earth clean, but it also aids in supporting great causes.” Relay for Life is a 24-hr team relay event that raises money to fight cancer. People of all ages come out to reminisce about loved ones who have died of cancer and honor those who have survived, while raising money to fight for a cure. Currently, about four million people take part in Relay events in more than 5,000 communities in the United States. Relay teams work to raise money from January through May. The 24-hr Relay event in Bladen County occurs this year on May 6th and 7th. After the event, White said her team will continue to sell aluminum can beverages all year long to increase their Relay total for next year. Cans for Causes is a domestic program sponsored by the Aluminum Association to support organizations in their recycling efforts by providing free bins and bin liners.
