More about Earth911:
Earth911 is a national network providing visitors
with community-specific environmental information through a ZIP code search
function. Through a recent partnership, the Aluminum Association and Earth911
plan to increase aluminum can recycling, raise visibility for environmental
protection, and spotlight Habitat for Humanity affiliates nationwide that
recycle aluminum cans to raise money for local programs.
By inputting a ZIP code, site visitors can find the nearest recycling center
for aluminum cans and other recyclable materials, local curbside bin and
schedule information, ways to dispose of household hazardous waste, and other
helpful environmental information. Habitat affiliates that participate in
the national recycling program can also post drop-off locations, recycling
events, and other recycling facts for local residents to access.
Another attribute of the Earth911 partnership is educating children about
recycling, while providing them with important local information. In mid-2003,
a public service announcement (PSA) was created. The PSA features popular television
character Jimmy Neutron and his dog, Goddard, from the Nickelodeon TV series “The
Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius.” The PSA and its Web site, www.recycleyourcans.org,
promote the value of recycling aluminum cans to children. Now, with a link
to www.earth911.org,
youth who visit the site have easy access to information about recycling
opportunities (from buy-back locations to curbside dates) in their communities.
