Below are two examples of how Novelis is prioritizing sustainability.
Closed Loop Recycling with Ford
Closed-loop recycling allows Novelis to take back as much of its customers’ aluminum scrap as possible, turning it directly back into the same product again. Closing the loop preserves the value of the alloy, reduces recycling and transportation costs, minimizes environmental impact and establishes a secure supply chain.
Novelis and Ford developed the world’s largest closed-loop recycling system for their most popular lineup of aluminum-intensive trucks. As a result, Ford recycles and reuses more than 90 percent of scrap – enough to produce 37,000 F-150 bodies each month.
As Ford stamps doors and fenders into shape at its facilities in Dearborn, Louisville and Buffalo, scrap material is shredded into chips, roughly the size of a dollar bill. The chips get sucked into the system and routed via a series of computer-controlled gates until the journey ends seconds later in a multi-ton pile in the back of a semi. Ford sends the material back to Novelis, where the aluminum recycler melts it down to molten aluminum and uses it for new aluminum coils.
Aluminum Sheet Battery Enclosure
The battery electric vehicle market is expected to triple globally by 2025. Novelis created the first flat-rolled, aluminum-intensive electric vehicle battery enclosure for mass production vehicles.
The aluminum battery enclosure presents several sustainability advantages compared to comparable steel models. It is 50 percent lighter, extends vehicle range six to 10 percent further on a single charge and offers a lower price premium on $/kg saved at substantially lower weight.
The battery enclosure is built using Novelis Advanz™ high-performing alloys that are featured on more than 225 models in every application.
