Summer Intern, Public Affairs

The Aluminum Association, based in Arlington, VA, represents aluminum production and jobs in the United States, ranging from primary production to value added products to recycling, as well as suppliers to the industry. The Association is the industry’s leading voice, providing global standards, business intelligence, sustainability research and industry expertise to member companies, policymakers and the general public. The aluminum industry helps manufacturers produce sustainable and innovative products, including more fuel-efficient vehicles, recyclable packaging, greener buildings and modern electronics. In the U.S., the aluminum industry supports $174 billion in economic activity and nearly 700,000 jobs.

Summer Internship

The Aluminum Association summer internship program gives interested students a meaningful experience in a professional office environment that teaches them about the industry and how official Washington, D.C. works. The three-part program includes department-specific tasks to achieve the organization’s goals, opportunities for only-in-D.C. experiences, and an informal seminar series about the aluminum industry. The 10-week program runs from June 3 – August 9. This is a paid internship.


The Association seeks a self-motivated and innovative individual with excellent communications, writing, and social media skills. Must have attention to detail and be able to work independently. This internship is best suited for college seniors or recent graduates with experience in communications, public affairs, media relations and social media.

The successful applicant will have an opportunity to contribute to the work of the association’s Public Affairs department in a substantive way including support on writing projects, social media engagement, member company outreach, event planning and other opportunities for cross-functional work with other departments to gain broader experience in DC-based public affairs.  

Job responsibilities include:

  • Write for the website, social media, press releases, fact sheets and other external communication channels;
  • Support and attend Capitol Hill and other D.C.-based events;
  • Research and draft content for weekly e-newsletter, Aluminum Week;
  • Monitor media using various tools and produce reports as needed;
  • Provide administrative support to events/operations and other departments as needed,
