Membership Services Director

The Aluminum Association (TAA), based in Arlington, VA is searching for a Membership Services Director. Established in 1933, TAA is the trade association for the North American aluminum industry and has a $7.5M budget. The Aluminum Association is the industry’s leading voice in Washington, D.C., providing global standards, industry statistics, trade policy and expert knowledge to member companies and policy makers nationwide. Highly engaged in public policy and technical forums, the Association is committed to advancing aluminum as the sustainable metal of choice around the world. 

This role will report to the Vice President, Finance and Administration and will support three key functions – Membership Development, Events and E-Commerce, and Membership Engagement.   

The position is responsible for the implementation and realization of The Aluminum Association’s membership recruitment and retention strategic objectives. The position is also responsible for developing one-on-one relationships with members, including identifying unique member needs, determining program priorities and assessing overall level of engagement/satisfaction. In support of these objectives, the position has primary responsibility for the membership experience related to all for-pay services offered by the Association, including major in person and virtual events, publications, and subscriptions. The Position also has primary responsibility for the membership back end, including the management and deployment of the Association Management Software platform (AMS). 

Responsibilities Membership Services Director 

Membership 

  • Design and manage member recruitment and retention strategies, programs and processes, including direct and content marketing, working with staff executives on committee value propositions, and evaluating enhancements to the association’s program/services. 
  • Lead and execute the new member onboarding process, which includes drafting external communications, developing relevant content and managing priorities for both new members and staff. 
  • Develop and maintain prospective member lists and background information for target segments, web generated prospective member contacts. 
  • Manage third-party vendors, and consultants as needed, ensuring work is carried out and completed on time and within budget. 

Membership Engagement 

  • Oversee and manage the association’s membership database (e.g., Association Management System – AMS database), including data structure, relevancy and integrity.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the administrative team that deploys the AMS and other membership engagement tools and develops continuous improvement plans for the system.
  • Communicate the association’s programs, services and systems to member company representatives to ensure engagement of key roles within member companies and to address at-risk members. 
  • Serve as the staff lead for the Membership Development Committee, which is the group of association members tasked with overseeing the membership function of the Aluminum Association.  

Events and E-Commerce 

  • Manage all member experiences related to for-pay content and activities, including in-person and virtual paid meetings, publications sales and subscriptions. 
  • Plan, organize and execute the association’s biannual meetings (spring and fall). Tasks include but are not limited to site management and selection, promotion, enhancing event sponsor program and managing meeting budget. 
  • Provide logistical support, communications and event management expertise for additional Association events, member-wide webinars and others as assigned.  
  • In conjunction with Standards and Technology department, support updates of various Aluminum Association technical publications, write communications materials for releases of new publications, manage relationship with Captum, create promotional and communication content for general promotion of technical publications. Track sales revenues and associated expenses. Coordinate with standards team to look for avenues for publication sales promotion. 
  • Performs additional ad hoc tasks driven by management or committees as requested or required. 

Required Qualifications – Membership Services Director

  • B.S. degree in relevant field. 
  • Eight years relevant professional level experience in a trade association or membership organization. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the manufacturing or metals extraction or fabrication industries. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to give both internal and external presentations to senior level executives. 
  • Strong research skills. 
  • Demonstrated experience in developing membership recruitment and retention materials. 
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects with competing priorities and exercise sound judgment in evaluating such situations and issues. 
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment. 
  • Preferred - CAE
